is composite decking easy to clean

Composite decking is an excellent option for low-maintenance gardens because it's so easy to clean! It's made using a combination of wood fibres and recycled plastic, which means it repels grime and dirt far more effectively than traditional timber boards.

The problem with timber boards

Traditional timber boards have a porous surface that makes them prone to stubborn dirt and stains. Let's take a look at a garden scenario to show you what we mean...

You've just come back from a walk with your dog, he's covered in mud after dive-bombing into puddles (it's just too much fun no to!) You take him into the back garden to shower him down before he heads inside for a bath. Low and behold, he's run straight onto your new deck and got muddy paw prints all over it. It was unavoidable, but now you've got to clean the deck as well as the dog!

If you have traditional timber boards in your garden that's no longer protected by a proper layer of sealant, that muddy water is going to start to soak in, causing an unsightly stain. To remove the stains and prevent the problem from happening in the future, you'll need to scrub, sand, stain and seal your timber deck boards. This could take hours and is certainly not an easy or enjoyable job if you're forced to do it in bad weather.

While timber deck boards are prone to stains and stubborn dirt, composite decking is designed to repel surface dirt and prevent stains. It has a protective polymer sleeve that covers the core of the deck board and prevents any form of liquid (muddy or otherwise) from penetrating the boards. With composite decking installed in your back garden, you won't need to worry about muddy paws, accidental food or wine spills or any other stains for that matter!

As well as making your deck resistant to stains, the polymer sleeve will help to keep your deck boards looking their best for years to come. It prevents water ingress, cracks, warping and a whole host of other problems that you commonly encounter with other types of decking. For that reason, composite decking is the best choice for homeowners who want a long-lasting, easy-to-maintain garden.

How do you clean composite decking?

As we've mentioned, cleaning composite decking is easy. So easy in fact, that we can summarise it in a few simple steps:

1. Sweep loose dirt from the surface of your deck

2. Apply a warm soapy solution and work it into the boards with a stiff brush

3. Use a power washer or hose to remove the soapy water, the dirt will lift away with it!
