Case Study: Composite Decking for the Hand & Spear
Young & Co, a British brewery with more than 200 public houses throughout the UK, got in touch with us a few years ago because one of their locations - the Hand & Spear pub in Weybridge, Surrey - was in need of some new outdoor decking. Young's wanted to find out if our products were up to the task.
The Hand & Spear is a popular gastropub with a stylish, contemporary vibe, but its outdoor area was beginning to look rather the worse for wear. The existing timber deck had proven problematic, with the pub's heavy footfall taking a visible toll on the wooden boards and leaving them in need of a thorough cleaning at the end of every single day.
Keen to maintain the Hand & Spear's modern image, Young & Co decided that it was time for them to switch to composite decking. Composite deck boards are far better suited to high-traffic environments than standard wood products, and the low-maintenance nature of composite wood makes it an obvious choice for commercial environments such as a busy public house.
After a brief conversation with Young & Co's representative, we sent them a couple of decking samples to look at. They eventually chose our capped EasyClean Terrain+ Silver Maple decking - these boards have a very contemporary design, and they're topped with a protective sleeve that allow the decking to be wiped clean with a damp cloth.

A Trip to the Pub
Before installation commenced, our Assistant Sales Manager travelled to Surrey (together with our Architect) to visit the Hand & Spear pub and conduct a site survey.
This visit helped us to understand the pub's requirements and gave us a chance to discuss the design for their new decked area. The final design included a railing system for extra safety.
Of course, much of a pub's business is conducted after dark, and so the Hand & Spear owners also requested integrated post lights and LED spotlights to illuminate their deck in the evenings.
